It wasn’t so much that the Bridgeport High School
girls track team had a bad day during last week’s
Class AAA, Region II championship at Lewis County High
School. Rather, it was that Jefferson’s team had an
outstanding one.
Last Thursday, the Cougars rolled to the regional
title by amassing 149 points. Although the Indians
were unable to land the runner-up spot, which went to
Hedgesville with 85.3 poitns, the Tribe did hold off
Elkins for third place. The Indians finished with 76.3
points, while EHS finished with 76 points.
Despite finishing 73 points beind the winner, the
Indians qualified several athletes for this week’s
state track meet at Charleston’s Laidley Field.
The Indians did take a pair of first place finishes.
Sarah Abbate continued her dominance in the 110
hurldes with a winning time of 16.43 seconds, while
freshman Kendall McCaugherty’s first regional
appearance ended with a winning jump of 5 feet, 6
inches in the high jump.
The Indians non-winning inidividual qualifiers were
plentiful, and led by junior Lauren Gilbert. Gilbert
will compete in the 100 (3rd, 13.48 seconds), the 200
(4th, 27.86 seconds) and the 400 (2nd, 1 minute, 1.1
seconds). Kate Merinar qualifed for BHS in the 3200
run (3rd, 2 minutes, 29.44 seconds), while Logan
Bryant will represent the school in the pole vault
(2nd, 7 feet, 6 inches).
Where the Indians will have a chance to make some
noise in Charleston will be in the relay events. BHS
qualified in four of the five relays during last
week’s regional.
The teams that qualified are: The team of Nikki
Shaughens, Cassie Abbate, Kayla Lynch and S. Abbate
(4x100, 4th, 54.69 seconds); the team of S. Abbate,
Lynch, Jenna Fogg and Gilbert (4x200, 4th, 1 minute,
53.73 seconds); the team of Allie Alonso, Jennifer
Alastanos, Stephanie Pose and Merinar (4x800, 4th);
and the team of Marie Conley, Kara Miller, Lora
