MARCH 28, SEASON-OPENER

Last Thursday's season-opening track meet at
Bridgeport High School was supposed to be memorable.
For the first time in years, BHS was able to host a
meet thanks to the installation of a six-figure,
all-weather track. Although the meet got underway, the
event didn't turn into one students will remember
thanks to Mother Nature.
Due to a rapid plunge in temperature, officials
canceled the meet after a handful of events were
complete. At the time the meet was ended,
Bridgeport's
boys and girls were both leading the competition.
"It was unbelievable," said BHS boys track coach Jon
Griffith. "The temperature must have fallen 20 degrees
in 30 minutes. The conditions made it impossible to
continue safely."
The girls had 25 points to outdistance Grafton with
12, Buckhannon-Upshur with 12 and Notre Dame and
South
Harrison
with 2 and 1 points, respectively.
Several girls won their events last week. Stephanie
Sellas took the pole vault with a jump of 6 feet and 6
inches.
Theresa Melko won the girls discus with a toss of 114
feet and 5 inches. Several other girls teams and
individuals also placed to help get the 25 point
total.
The boys finished with 33 points, which was three
better than Buckhannon-Upshur. Grafton had 16 points
and Notre Dame 2.
David Lawson won the boys high jump with a mark of 6
feet and 1 inch. Chris Hampton took the long jump with
a leap of 19 feet and 11.5 inches.
"The events we got to complete went well," said
Griffith. " ... Overall for our first time, I felt
like we put together a very good meet."
