Bridgeport Middle School’s girls track team dominated
a field of 14 teams at Friday’s Harry Green
Invitational held at the “Track to the Future” complex
at a cool and damp Wayne Jamison Field. The boys,
although not winning, came in fourth at the second
annual event.
The Braves scored 157 points to get past second place
Buckhannon-Upshur, which totaled 124.33. Taylor County
Middle was a distant third with 62 points.
"The girls looked very impressive," said BMS coach Rob
Riley. "They placed third or better in every event but
one. That's not an easy thing to do at a meet the size
of the Harry Green Invitational."
The high placing proved critical. The Braves managed
just four first place finishes in the meet.
Two of the first place finishes came by Jenna Fogg.
Fogg won the 1600 meter run with a time of 6 minutes
and 5.9 seconds, while capturing top honors in the
high jump with a mark of 4 feet, 10 inches.
Also earning a first place was Kate Bishop. She took
first in the 200 meter hurdle event with a time of
32.9 seconds.
The final first place was earned by seventh grader
Schelby Bordner. She took the 400 meter dash with a
time of 1 minute and 10 seconds.
"Those three girls really stepped it up," said Riley.
Their efforts, as well as the rest of the unit's, was
needed. The field, according to Riley, was impressive.
"There was quality competition from all across the
state," he said. " ... We many not face a stronger
field this year."
The boys' total of 51 was well off the pace of
Charleston's McKinley, which won the event with 131
points to easily edge runner-up Miller, with 78
points. South Harrison Middle School finished third
with 63 points.
"I was satisfied with the finish," said Riley. "This
year's team is made up of a lot of above average
athletes, but no standouts. It takes a couple of
standouts to place in the top 1 or 2 at a big
invitational."
The highest individual finish was Nathan Schwenk who
took second in the pole vault. He finished with a jump
9 feet and 6 inches.
Also getting some multiple placing in the meet was
Josh Brown. Brown took fifth place finishes in the
100, 200 and 400 meter dashes.
Heath Haws placed in two events. He finished fourth in
the 3,200 meter run and the pole vault.
Riley was pleased with both team's showings, as well
as the crowd. However, he said the weather was a bit
of a problem.
"The rain took away some of the fun," said Riley. "I
thought the crowd was great, despite the weather. I
haven't seen that many people at a middle school meet
in quite a while."
Riley added that most of the schools have indicated
they will return next year. He also offered praise to
BHS boys track coach Jon Griffith, the meet's
director, for a solid event.
