Bridgeport Middle School’s boys and girls track teams
were victorious in a six-team meet held last Thursday
at Wayne Jamison Field.
"Overall, I was very pleased with the way things
went," said boys coach Rob Riley."Not only with the
fact that both teams won, but also at how smoothly the
meet went. It was the first middle school meet on the
(new) track and things could not have gone better."
The girls totaled 167 points to outdistance Taylor
County
with 135 points. Elkins was third with 102
points, while Washington Irving finished fourth with
91 points.
The Braves had several first-place finishers in the
meet. The winners included Lauren Gilbert in the 100
meter dash with a time of 13.9 seconds, while she also
won the 200 meter even with a mark of 28.26.
In the 800 meter run, Amanda Fischer was with a mark
of two minutes and 42.93 seconds. BMS also won the
1600 meter run thanks to Jenna Fogg's 6:06.73 effort.
The 4x200 team (Lauren Gallagher, Victoria Gorby,
Jackie Kapp, Elizabeth Saliga) edged past WI to take
first place. The unit posted a mark of 2:06.80.
"It was impressive victory for the girls," said Riley.
"They beat
Taylor County and Elkins and those teams
have given us trouble in the past."
The boys found their first place win a little bit
closer than their female counterparts. The Braves
totaled 151 points to get past WI, which finished with
140 points.
Salem Middle School also made a strong
showing, finishing third with 107 points, while Elkins
was fourth with 58 points.
In the running events,
Bridgeport managed to capture
only one first place. That win came with the 4x800
meter relay unit (Kyle Lanham, Jeremey Gum, Andrew
Cunningham, Chris
Mahdavi) easily outdistancing WI with a time of
10:53.50.
The only two individual first place finishes came in
the boys high jump and the boys shot put. Matt Wilson
cleared 5'6 for the win, while Daniel Hill's toss of
35'5 was good enough to win the shot put.
BMS was able to get the win in the boys meet by
placing strongly in the second through sixth place
categories.
"It was truly a team effort," said Riley. "No one boy
stood out ... We won the meet because of depth."
The Braves were back in action Monday at
Ritchie
County
. The club also will host the first-ever Harry
Green Middle School Invitational this Friday (see
story Page B1) at Wayne Jamison Field.
