Although coach Julie Hartley believes the talent for
this year’s boys and girls cross country teams is
solid, she is concerned about the numbers.
In the early going, only five boys and 10 girls have
tried out for the squad. And, Hartley said she’s not
certain all of those will remain.
“I am hoping a few more will come out when school
starts,” said Hartley, who is leaving tryouts open.
“There were about five to seven runners that didn’t
come out that I expected. I hope they change their
minds, and join later.”
Even with the limited numbers, there is talent on the
early roster. Most notable on the number-depleted boys
side is Ben Booth and Brink Murray.
“They are ahead of the pack for the boys,” said
Hartley.
On the girls side of things, a trio of girls are
leading the way. Kate Merinar, last year’s standout,
is being pushed by Jenna Fogg and Stephanie Posey.
“We need a good three to four weeks to get everyone in
shape,” said Hartley. “A little hard work will go a
long way.”
The teams open their season Sept. 6 in the Autumn
Classic, which is held at Witco Park in St. Mary's.
The team's lone home meet, The Freedom Run, is Sept.
20 at Bel Meadow Golf Course. Hartley said they are
accepting donations of $150 or more that puts a logo
on the back of the meet t-shirt.
The meet will be have an open race for any age at 8
a.m., before the cross country event. Race forms are
located at www.runwv.com.
